Is it Conventional, GMO or Organic? PLU Codes Will Tell You!

PLU Codes unravel the organic vs. conventional vs genetically modified questions about produce

PLU Codes unravel the organic vs. conventional vs genetically modified questions about grocery store produce

A friend of mine recently posted this image to his social networking page.

Since I’ve been complaining for ages about not being able to tell the “real” food from the “other” food for ages, I wanted to check it out to see if it was legitimate.

It is.

Go to this page: https://www.plucodes.com/faqs.aspx and use the drop down menu to verify how the labeling is handled for conventional, organic and GMO (genetically modified) foods.

Do realize that not all produce has PLU codes – some use “retailer assigned codes” (this is discussed in the FAQ drop down too, if you look) and some use UPCs (universal product codes), but this PLU format is four or five numbers long. Four being conventionally grown (between 3000 and 4000) and they use a leading “9” for organically grown food, a leading “8” for genetically altered produce.

So all I need to do is to remember “Run away from Crazy 8” and I’ll never unwittingly carry home any GMO-stuffs! 😉
